ITINERARY

 

 

Day 1. 18th July. Ulaanbaatar. Arrival day.

 

There are no activities planned – today group members arrive to Ulaanbaatar from all over the world. At 6 pm you will meet your tour leader in the hotel lobby for Orientation meeting.

Day 2. 19th July. Ulaanbaatar

 

We will spend first half of the day on a guided tour of Mongolian capital: Gandan monastery, Winter palace of the last Mongolian Khan and Zaisan Hill with a monument to Mongolian soldiers who died in the Second World War. Afternoon is free for you to explore rapidly changing Ulaanbaatar. Two main city museums – National History and Natural History – host vast collections of artefacts of Mongolian life and nature.

Day 3. 20th July. Khustai National Park.

 

In the morning we will leave Ulaanbaatar and head to Khustai National Park - one of the few places where you can see wild Mongolian horses, Takhi. In the park we will also have our first ger stay experience. Ger is a type of tent – made of layers of felt on a wooden frame. This portable “house” is ideal for hot summers and cold winters, and can be packed up in just several hours if nomadic family decides to move to a new location. Tourist gers have beds, stools, small table and a stove – everything is organized for a refreshing rest after a road trip through Mongolian steppes.

Day 4: 21st July. Karakorum

 

Today we will continue travelling to the heart of Chingiz Khan’s lands – town of Karakorum. Once the capital of Mongolian and a major trading center, the city is now lying in ruins.

Day 5: 22nd July. Bat-Ulzii.

 

In the morning we will visit Erdene Zuu monastery – ancient center of Buddhism in Mongolia. Built in the end of 16th century, Erdene Zuu was almost completely destroyed by the order of the new communist government in 1939. Nowadays it’s being restored, and again becoming one of the major places of worship. After visiting the monastery we’ll continue traveling to a small village of Bat-Ulzii in the middle of Mongolian grasslands.

Day 6: 23rd July. Bat-Ulzii

 

We will spend the day at the Yak Festival. The program includes: yak races, yak polo and yak rodeo. Herdsmen are coming from all over the region to choose best yaks. You also will be able to enjoy traditional Mongolian music and dancing. The day will be finished with yak cheese tasting.

Day 7: 24th July. Ongiin Khiid

 

We will leave grasslands and head South to Delger Khangaimountain area. As we drive, the scenery will change from flat steppes to hills and mountains.

Day 8: 25th July. Khongoriin Els

 

We will continue driving towards the Gobi desert area. Overnight we will stop at a ger camp near Khongoriin Els dunes - “singing sands”. It’s a perfect place for camel riding. Dunes are part of the Gobi Gurvansaikhan National Park – the largest national park of Mongolia.

Day 9: 26th July. Yolyn Am

 

Today we will head further south, to Gurvan Saikhan Mountains. Valley around Yolyn Am – Vulture Gorge – is a home to a large population of vultures and eagles. It’s one of the best places in Mongolia for bird watching. Ice and snow in the gorge partially melt only by September. In some years they remain all year around.

Day 10: 27th July. Yolyn Am

 

Spend today exploring the area of Yolyn Am and Flaming cliffs – big red rock formations where dinosaur eggs and skeletons were found.

Day 11: 28th July. Tsagaan Suvarga

 

Before we leave Gobi region, we will have one more overnight stop: Tsagaan Suvarga (White Stupa) – a huge limestone formation. Tsagaan Suvarga is one of the places in Mongolia where you can see petroglyphs.

Day 12: 29th July. Baga Gazryn Chuluu

 

On the way to our ger camp at Baga Gazryn Chuluu – granite mountain – we will stop in Choir. Once a big Soviet military base, the city now is famous as one of the stops on Trans-Mongolian route. One of the most interesting sights in Choir is a monument to the first Mongolian cosmonaut near the train station. After visiting nearby Choir monastery, we will continue to the ger camp – our last ger stay in Mongolia.

Day 13: 30th July. Ulaanbaatar

 

Approximately 5 hours drive will bring us back to the capital of Mongolia. Tonight is free to relax after the road trip.

Day 14: 31st July. Ulaanbaatar

 

Today is a free day to explore Ulaanbaatar, buy souvenirs and visit a cultural show. In the evening you can join your tour leader and the rest of the group for final night dinner.

Day 15: 1st August. Ulaanbaatar. Departure day

 

Today is the last day of the trip. There are no activities planned, and you can depart Ulaanbaatar any time.
